The Joint Master's in Social Work (J.M.S.W.) is a distinctive partnership between N.C. A&T State University and UNCG. This program's coursework equips students for clinical practice in diverse cultural settings, building upon the universities' shared multicultural heritage and cooperative spirit. Participants benefit from cross-campus learning opportunities and comprehensive academic resources at both institutions.
The J.M.S.W. curriculum emphasizes understanding diverse cultures, historical contexts, and individual identities, particularly focusing on underserved populations affected by systemic oppression, trauma, and socioeconomic disparities. These insights inform therapeutic approaches that foster resilience, utilizing assessments that consider psychological, environmental, and community factors. By employing culturally aware methodologies, the program aims to strengthen social wellbeing and elevate living standards for individuals and communities alike.
Students may select between a traditional two-year track or an accelerated one-year advanced standing option.
The UNCG International Programs Center (IPC) offers semester or year-long global study opportunities, with J.M.S.W. students potentially participating during summer breaks. Study Abroad expenses may be covered through financial aid, and IPC additionally provides travel funding for eligible UNCG students via its international programs endowment.
Throughout the program, learners will engage in and share community-focused research that advances professional knowledge and enhances practical social work applications.
