The Doctor of Philosophy in Special Education is designed for individuals passionate about special education, deaf education, or early childhood intervention (specifically birth through kindergarten special education). This rigorous program mandates at least 69 credit hours beyond a master's degree, focusing on four key aspects: producing research to advance the discipline, effectively disseminating knowledge to enhance professional practice, fostering collaborative professional networks, and developing, analyzing, and applying special education policies. Doctoral candidates must complete all prescribed coursework, with additional requirements tailored individually through key milestones in consultation with their primary advisor and dissertation committee.
The curriculum provides comprehensive training in diverse research methodologies, encompassing quantitative, qualitative, single subject, and mixed-method approaches. Through research apprenticeships, students refine their investigative skills.
Representative course offerings encompass Current Topics in Special Education, Single Subject Research Methodology, Comprehensive Analysis of Special Education Scholarship, Instructional Coaching and Supervision, and Higher Education Pedagogy & Adult Learning Principles.
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or appropriately evaluated credentials for non-U.S. schools.
English Language Proficiency: TOEFL: internet based - 79, or paper based - 550. A score of at least 6.5 is required on the IELTS.
