The thesis-based Master of Science program mandates completion of 30 credit hours, encompassing 4 core required courses, at least 1 elective, and a minimum of 1 research and thesis credit hour. While students can focus on Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (MCD) or Environmental, Ecology, and Evolutionary Biology (E3B), these concentrations are optional. Requirements include passing an oral qualifying examination, obtaining thesis proposal approval, and successfully completing and defending a master's thesis.
The Biology Master of Science program enables comprehensive education across biological disciplines while allowing focus in specific fields of interest. Students can choose between thesis and non-thesis options. The thesis path prepares those needing research expertise for their professional objectives, while the non-thesis alternative suits careers demanding advanced education without formal research, such as community college instruction. Specialization options include Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology (MCD) and Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Biology (E3B). Both doctoral and master's candidates may pursue collaborative research projects supervised by Biology department faculty and selected faculty at Charlotte's Carolina Medical Center.
