The Department of Biological Sciences offers a non-thesis Master of Science in Biology program tailored for students seeking advanced education for professional schools, graduate studies, or careers in biological sciences. This track is ideal for those needing graduate-level training without extensive research requirements, such as educators at community or regional colleges. Students can pursue broad coursework or focus on specialized areas through two concentrations: Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology (MCD) or Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Biology (E3B). Prospective students should work closely with their faculty advisor and supervisory committee to select their concentration and academic plan.
This Biology M.S. program allows for comprehensive study across biological disciplines while enabling specialization in chosen fields. The department provides both thesis and non-thesis options. The thesis path suits students needing research training, while the non-thesis alternative serves those requiring graduate education without intensive research components, particularly future educators. Both tracks offer specialization opportunities through the MCD and E3B concentrations. Graduate students in both M.S. and Ph.D. programs can engage in research projects supervised jointly by Biology faculty and selected professors from Carolina's Medical Center in Charlotte.
