The Master of Public Administration program offers comprehensive education and professional training for careers in public service and nonprofit organizations. Through scholarly research and practical applications, it advances the field of public administration while serving community needs. Students can specialize in various concentrations including Non-Profit Leadership, Urban Governance & Policy, Arts Management, Crisis Preparedness, and Fiscal Administration.
To earn the degree, candidates must complete 39 graduate credit hours across three sequential phases: (1) foundational courses, (2) specialization electives, and (3) research components. The curriculum examines crucial subjects such as governmental structures and legal frameworks, socioeconomic factors, organizational leadership strategies, public budgeting methodologies, and data-driven decision-making tools. While most coursework must be completed after program admission, up to six (6) previously earned graduate credits may count toward degree requirements with the MPA Director's approval. All students must fulfill a hands-on professional experience component, which can be satisfied through either an approved internship or relevant work experience (refer to Professional Engagement and Internship options below). Beyond classroom learning, each candidate must develop and present a substantive research project.
