The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) English as a Second Language (ESL) program caters to bachelor's degree holders from any field who wish to teach English Language Learners (ELL) in K-12 public education. This 30-credit hour M.A.T. program consists of two stages: the Graduate Certificate phase (Phase I) and the Master's degree completion phase (Phase II). Finishing Phase I (Graduate Certificate) grants candidates the initial Standard Professional I teaching license for Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). Phase I involves 18 credit hours of coursework, including mandatory graduate-level student teaching or internship. After completing Phase I and receiving Graduate School approval, eligible candidates can proceed to Phase II to fulfill the remaining Master's degree requirements and earn the advanced Standard Professional II teaching license. Prospective students must apply to the Graduate School for admission to the TESL Graduate Certificate program (Phase I). A separate application is required for Master's program admission (Phase II) after Phase I completion.
