Addiction counselors support individuals in overcoming dependencies on substances such as drugs and alcohol, as well as harmful behaviors including gambling. These professionals step in during critical moments when patients are frequently facing their most challenging phases of addiction. Certified substance abuse counselors may also provide guidance to families affected by addiction to foster recovery. They can be found working in various settings such as outpatient clinics, residential rehab programs, transitional living facilities, and medical institutions. Many certified addiction counselors feel a deep personal connection to this field, with some having conquered their own substance use disorders or observed a family member's battle with addiction. Others are attracted to this specialty due to the meaningful impact they can create through their daily work.
In the last decade, every single one of our graduates has successfully passed the addiction licensure examination on their initial try. Our alumni have secured positions at prominent institutions including McLeod Treatment Center, Anuvia, Charlotte Rescue Mission, SABER, and Phoenix Counseling Center, among others.
The Journal of Addictions and Offender Counseling is based within UNC Charlotte's Department of Counseling, with our faculty member serving as its current editor. This nationally recognized publication exposes our students to groundbreaking research and academic work in the field.
UNC Charlotte's program stands among just five in North Carolina accredited by the North Carolina Substance Abuse Practice Board (NCSAPPB), the state's governing body for addiction counselor certification. This accreditation enables our addiction studies students to expedite their path toward becoming Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialists (LCAS).
