Addiction counselors support individuals in overcoming dependencies on substances such as drugs and alcohol, as well as harmful behaviors including gambling. These professionals step in during critical moments when patients are frequently facing their most challenging phases of addiction. Certified substance abuse counselors may also provide guidance to families affected by addiction to foster recovery. They can be found working in various settings such as outpatient clinics, residential rehab programs, transitional living facilities, and medical institutions. Many certified addiction counselors feel a deep personal connection to this field, with some having conquered their own substance use disorders or observed a family member's battle with addiction. Others are attracted to this specialty due to the meaningful impact they can create through their daily work.
