Health communication explores how communication influences health awareness, promotion, and maintenance. Healthcare practitioners rely on communication as a vital instrument for illness prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management. Additionally, communication serves as the primary means through which people gain knowledge about health concepts and positive lifestyle choices. Those pursuing research in this field might investigate topics like doctor-patient interactions, public health initiatives, organizational communication in medical settings, family health discussions, as well as issues surrounding mental wellbeing, gender roles, faith, disabilities, and senior care.
The Communication Studies graduate program provides broad exposure rather than specialization, with coursework spanning five key disciplines: Health Communication, Rhetorical/Cultural Analysis, Media Research, Organizational Dynamics, and Public Relations Strategy. This curriculum balances theoretical foundations with practical application. Participants undergo intensive instruction in research methodologies and conceptual frameworks while having the flexibility to pursue personal academic interests through elective selections and their culminating thesis project.
