Beyond the conventional Special Education General Curriculum or Adapted Curriculum K-12 Programs, the Department of Special Education and Child Development partners with the Department of Reading and Elementary Education to provide a combined B.A. in Special Education - General Curriculum and Elementary Education K-6. This dual program enables graduates to obtain a Standard Professional 1 (SP1) Professional Educator's License for both Special Education General Curriculum K-6 and Elementary Education K-6. Those completing the dual program are certified to teach children with mild disabilities in kindergarten through sixth grade, as well as qualify for entry-level roles in general elementary education classrooms for the same grade levels.
Students who complete the Special Education - General Curriculum and Elementary Education K-6 Dual Program gain the skills to: deliver customized, structured, and assessed instruction for students with disabilities; support these learners in general classrooms, resource rooms, and other educational environments; and empower students with disabilities to reach their highest potential in both current and future settings. The program equips graduates to fulfill North Carolina's Professional Teaching Standards and the ten INTASC Standards for new educators, covering areas such as Content Pedagogy, Student Development, Diverse Learners, Instructional Strategies, Classroom Management, Communication Technology, Lesson Planning, Assessment, Reflective Practice, and Community Engagement. Through specialized coursework and hands-on training in diverse settings, graduates develop and apply research-backed methods in special and elementary education.
