The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish requires 30 credit hours of language and content courses at the 2000 level or higher, along with a one-credit Senior Seminar. Spanish majors are highly encouraged to pursue coursework in an additional language through at least the Intermediate level.
Mastering Spanish is among the most valuable skills in today's interconnected society. With over 400 million native speakers—approximately 6% of the global population—Spanish ranks as the world's second most widely spoken language. It serves as an official language in 20 nations and stands as the top second-language choice in the United States. For US residents, Spanish proficiency proves particularly beneficial, as projections suggest the Latino population could reach nearly 130 million by 2060, potentially making the US the world's largest Spanish-speaking country, surpassing Mexico.
UNC Charlotte's Spanish program provides diverse pathways, including a BA in Spanish with specialization options in applied language or literature and culture. Students can enhance their credentials with certificates in Translation, Business Spanish, or Hispanic Literary Studies. Immersive study abroad programs in Spain and Latin America foster cultural understanding and language mastery, while local internships in Charlotte connect students with the region's Spanish-speaking professional community.
