Philosophy students can choose to complete Honors in Philosophy alongside or instead of University Honors. This program combines GPA standards, specialized courses, independent research, and a thesis project. Students must receive approval from both the department honors committee and the Honors College to graduate with honors.
The program offers two key advantages: (1) official recognition on transcripts (Graduation with Honors), and (2) the more valuable opportunity for academic development. Honors projects serve as training for the rigorous research and writing required in graduate-level philosophy and humanities programs (including literature, cultural studies, and related fields). They also provide outstanding material for graduate school applications. Additionally, close collaboration with faculty allows for personalized guidance, which often leads to stronger recommendation letters.
