The Department of Languages and Culture Studies offers programs focused on enhancing linguistic abilities while fostering cultural understanding through language, literature, and translation studies. Beyond major and minor degrees, as well as undergraduate certificates, the department provides courses in Ancient/Modern Greek, Farsi, Hebrew, Latin, Portuguese, Swahili, and additional languages, available upon request or via the NC Language Exchange. Students pursuing foreign language education can consider these pathways: A dedicated major in French, German, Japanese, or Spanish following the traditional liberal arts framework, with optional teaching certification A dual major combining a foreign language with another field or pairing two languages A minor in Arabic, Chinese, Classics, Francophone Studies, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish Language-focused coursework to supplement a primary major in another discipline A structured course sequence culminating in a specialized certificate
