The Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS) program at UNC's School of Information and Library Science (SILS) equips students to emerge as innovators in creating, managing, assessing, and overseeing information systems. This curriculum cultivates specialized skills in examining, structuring, presenting, and accessing information, with a strong focus on building future-ready information solutions. MSIS graduates pursue dynamic careers across diverse fields: corporate sectors like healthcare and finance, non-profits, government bodies, educational institutions, and startup ventures. Professionals may specialize in areas such as system architecture, database management, information discovery, knowledge systems, web development, educational technology, digital platforms, interface creation, user experience, and cutting-edge innovations.
UNC SILS also offers an Archives and Records Management (ARM) specialization, training students for careers in archival institutions, special collections, historical organizations, corporate records departments, and curation-focused workplaces. ARM methodologies emphasize origin tracking, collection organization, and contextual understanding - skills growing ever more crucial in our information-saturated world. Students can combine ARM studies with either the MSIS or Master of Science in Library Science degree programs.
