The UNC Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling master's program aims to cultivate skilled counselors equipped to deliver cutting-edge services to diverse populations with physical, psychiatric, developmental, and intellectual disabilities across various settings (including vocational rehabilitation, educational institutions, disability management, and assisted living facilities). The program emphasizes evidence-based practices and service models designed to enhance clients' functioning in key life domains (physical, vocational, educational, developmental, psychosocial, and independent living). UNC-trained counselors support transition-age individuals and adults through culturally sensitive, developmentally appropriate interventions. Graduates merge rehabilitation expertise with advocacy, leadership, and collaborative skills to assess client needs, overcome barriers, and foster quality of life, community integration, and personal growth.
The Division of Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling is committed to preparing rehabilitation and mental health counselors to serve North Carolinians with mental, behavioral, or neurodevelopmental conditions, particularly those with psychiatric and developmental disabilities. Grounded in respect for human dignity and self-determination, the Division trains counselors to: (i) enhance clients' functional abilities, independence, and life satisfaction, (ii) deliver culturally responsive, evidence-based care, and (iii) tailor services to individual, family, and community needs. This holistic approach addresses psychological, vocational, spiritual, and physical wellbeing alongside social, familial, and community connections. The Division champions inclusivity, diversity, health equity, and service to marginalized populations.
Our division provides two rigorous master's programs:
The 68-credit Master of Science in Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling
The 65-credit Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling
These programs deliver specialized training in rehabilitation and mental health counseling, preparing graduates to assist individuals with mental health challenges, co-occurring conditions, and chronic illnesses/disabilities. Alumni employ diverse therapeutic approaches to improve outcomes for those facing mental health concerns or disability-related challenges.
