The Master of Fine Arts program at UNC Chapel Hill spans two years and requires 60 credit hours. Students gain credits through studio work, structured critiques, career preparation, and academic electives. The curriculum also includes an optional teaching fundamentals and career development course covering essential skills like grant applications, professional portfolio presentation, and gallery interactions, designed for those pursuing academic paths. Though not mandatory, this course is necessary for students applying for M.F.A. teaching fellowships. Since most financial support comes through these fellowships, we highly recommend enrolling in this valuable opportunity.
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in art, we also welcome applications from students who hold undergraduate degrees in other fields and can present a strong art portfolio. Students who do not have a bachelor's degree in art should have at least one basic-level and one intermediate-level course in art history in preparation for the graduate-level coursework in art history required of M.F.A. students.
The required minimum total score on the exams are internet-based TOEFL exam = 90, The IELTS exam = 7.
