The Fiber Area features a weaving studio equipped with floor looms and tapestry tools, a dedicated dye kitchen, a papermaking facility complete with a Reina beater, and an outdoor workspace. Our space also supports various surface design methods like silkscreen printing and sculptural approaches including felting and basket weaving. Classroom resources include sewing machines, dress forms, rug tufting equipment, and numerous other specialized tools.
BFA Fiber students follow a structured curriculum starting with foundational skills in dyeing, surface design, knitting, crochet, garment construction, and 3D forms. The program progresses to advanced, concept-oriented courses covering sculptural off-loom techniques, avant-garde fashion, textile sociopolitics, and woven structures.
MFA candidates join CSULB's Fiber program to refine their artistic practice, push creative boundaries, and broaden their research methodologies. They enjoy unrestricted access to all studio facilities and receive individual workspace. The program focuses on mentorship through private studio consultations, cross-disciplinary critique sessions, and faculty committee collaboration. Students regularly showcase their work in the School of Art Galleries and throughout Long Beach exhibition spaces.
