The Master of Arts in Global Studies is a two-year interdisciplinary program that blends academic depth with real-world application. This research-focused degree trains participants to examine cross-border phenomena influencing nations and communities worldwide, including international activist networks, conflicts over cultural and political values, and the economic impacts of global commerce and labor trends. The curriculum emphasizes topics of current global importance with direct policy implications. As a developing academic field, UNC-Chapel Hill plays a pioneering role in shaping Global Studies' theoretical frameworks and research methodologies.
The 36-credit program consists of 18 required credits covering foundational courses, research methods, and thesis writing, plus 18 specialization credits in a selected focus area. All candidates must produce and defend either a research thesis or policy analysis paper. With cohorts limited to about 10 students annually, the program welcomes both recent graduates and professionals returning to academia after field experience.
An undergraduate degree from an appropriate college or university, or its international equivalent, is required. Students should have maintained at least a B grade average (cumulative 3.0 GPA) during their undergraduate career. Prior experience, academic or work-related, dealing with global issues will be an asset.
The required minimum total score on the exams are internet-based TOEFL exam = 90, The IELTS exam = 7.
