The Health, Medicine, and Humanity Concentration explores the biological, cultural, and political-economic aspects of health, illness, and healing across time. Studies examine the body as both a symbolic and evolutionary entity, how suffering and recovery are influenced by historical contexts, and the biological/sociocultural dimensions of health challenges affecting individuals and communities.
Biomedical practices and alternative healing approaches are analyzed as social constructs influenced by historical developments, societal structures, and power dynamics. This perspective connects health concerns to wider systems including environment, ecology, gender, sexuality, racial/ethnic identity, nationality, and class distinctions. Using diverse methodologies and theoretical frameworks, the concentration also investigates how societies create, apply, and challenge health-related knowledge.
