The J.D. and M.A. in Media and Communication programs can be pursued simultaneously through a dual degree initiative offered by UNC's School of Law and School of Media and Journalism, focusing on legal and communication studies. Prospective students must secure separate admission to both the law school and the M.A. program before qualifying for the combined J.D./M.A. track. Participants generally undertake the mandatory first-year law coursework during their initial year in the dual program. To earn the J.D., candidates need to fulfill 86 credit hours, with the option to count up to 12 credits from approved Media and Communication M.A. courses. Similarly, the M.A. requires 39 credits, allowing up to 12 credits from eligible J.D. classes.
