The Latin American history program at UNC boasts a longstanding heritage, supported by extensive library collections and strong institutional backing. Our department excels in studying South American, Central American, and Caribbean history, covering periods from 1500s Peru to present-day Cuba, with focus areas including cultural exchange, racial dynamics, national identity formation, and political movements. Students benefit from UNC's joint Latin American Studies Consortium with Duke University, enabling cross-campus course enrollment. All recent students have obtained summer research travel funding, with many additionally securing FLAS grants for Portuguese language training.
