Emory boasts a distinguished, nationally acclaimed PhD program in U.S. history, supported by 12 core faculty members and 7 affiliated professors. Students in this program develop strong mentorship bonds with faculty while engaging with a vibrant academic community that includes graduate scholars from various historical disciplines and broader interdisciplinary programs within Laney Graduate School.
Those accepted into the U.S. history program undergo thorough, advanced training covering American history from colonial times to the modern era, along with focused study in their selected specialties. The program excels in areas including slavery and emancipation studies, racial and ethnic studies, African American history, gender and sexuality research, Civil Rights scholarship, American religious history, and Modern Conservatism. Complementary strengths in Latin American and African History further enable exploration of comparative, diasporic, and transnational historical perspectives.
