Our faculty in Interpersonal Communication uphold the discipline's core principles through both teaching and research, while actively contributing to the department's interdisciplinary PhD program that encourages exploration across diverse academic fields. Key research focuses encompass gender and communication, interpersonal influence, hate speech and counter-discourses, race in social discourse, family communication, and identity in communication. In these domains, faculty examine communication patterns rooted in people's daily interactions and social perceptions. This emphasis on theory grounded in real-world practices creates meaningful conceptual bridges with organizational communication, cultural studies, and media studies scholars. Such cross-disciplinary collaborations benefit all departmental areas. For instance, investigations into how narratives and myths perpetuate racism, sexism, and heteronormativity might involve faculty from interpersonal communication, organizational communication, performance studies, media/cultural studies, and rhetorical studies working together.
