The Department of Art provides a three-year Master of Fine Arts program focused on Fine Arts. This curriculum fosters creative exploration across various mediums including drawing, installation, interdisciplinary studio work, experimental forms, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, community-engaged art, video, and beyond. The program combines intensive studio work with studies in art history, theory, and critique. Through our partnership with Prospect New Orleans, students gain exposure to globally renowned artists and academics via our Visiting Artist Program. Graduation requirements include a final exhibition, accompanying written thesis, and oral presentation defending both components.
During their M.F.A. studies at the University of New Orleans, students are expected to cultivate Visual Literacy, Active Participation in Critical Dialogue, and Dedicated Artistic Practice. The program emphasizes personalized learning paths that balance structured development with creative experimentation. We promote deep engagement with core artistic fundamentals while maintaining awareness of broader contemporary art practices. Graduate studies place significant importance on mastering critical analysis, articulate discussion, and effective writing skills within the artistic community.
