The UNM Physics and Astronomy Department's PhD program enables students to pursue both theoretical and experimental research across diverse subfields. Our faculty includes 28 regular members from Physics and Astronomy and Optical Science and Engineering programs, complemented by numerous research, adjunct, and part-time instructors, along with a dozen postdoctoral researchers. We serve more than 100 undergraduate majors and an equal number of graduate students, all based in the state-of-the-art Physics and Astronomy and Interdisciplinary Science (PAIS) facility.
Our department hosts multiple research hubs such as the New Mexico Particle Physics Center, the Quantum Information and Control Center, and the Astrophysical Research and Technology Center. Students frequently collaborate with the Optical Science and Engineering Graduate Program, the High Technology Materials Center, and nearby institutions including Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories, the Air Force Research Lab, and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.
