The PhD in Language and Literature program mandates 51 course credits, comprehensive examinations in three fields, foreign language proficiency, and a dissertation. Most PhD candidates enter with a recently completed Master's in English (typically exceeding 30 credit hours). The English department may transfer up to 24 of these credits toward the PhD, leaving approximately 30 course hours to fulfill after enrollment. This rigorous program demands at least four years of intensive study to achieve complete subject mastery and contribute original research. Applicants must hold a Master's degree in English or a closely related field. These requirements apply to all doctoral candidates studying British and American literatures.
