Nuclear engineers lead the way in rapidly evolving fields focused on developing safer and more efficient methods to power our world. They concentrate on designing reactor systems, preventing nuclear proliferation, studying how radiation interacts with materials, and minimizing and managing radioactive waste. The University of New Mexico's Nuclear Engineering undergraduate program provides students with comprehensive education in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering fundamentals, advancing to specialized courses covering radiation interactions with matter, radiation transport, detection and protection, nuclear reactor theory and safety, thermalhydraulics, and nuclear systems design. Students also choose technical electives to deeply investigate specific nuclear engineering topics that interest them.
In exciting research initiatives, UNM nuclear engineering faculty are examining nuclear reactor cooling system behavior during severe accident scenarios. Partnerships with national laboratories concentrate on multiple areas, such as nuclear criticality safety, radiation transport, reactor theory, space-based nuclear power, and probabilistic risk assessment.
