Geography provides a comprehensive view of how social, political, economic, and physical elements interact across space and time. It examines the past, present, and future distribution of human settlements, cultural and economic characteristics, and natural resources. Geographic research explores critical environmental concerns and the interplay between culture and nature. The department emphasizes environmental studies, including human-environment relationships, natural resource policy, management, legal geography, social justice, and Geographic Information Science (GIScience), covering GIS, cartography, remote sensing, GPS, and spatial analysis.
The Geography and Environmental Studies program provides both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees, along with a Master of Science degree. The B.A. and B.S. programs equip students for professional careers or advanced study in the M.S. program. The B.A. degree offers foundational geographic knowledge for careers in applied geography or environmental studies.
The GIScience minor complements majors across the College of Arts and Sciences and other UNM schools. These technologies are increasingly valuable in fields like social and physical sciences, engineering, healthcare, architecture, urban planning, and law.
