The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Environmental Science integrates quantitative research on the relationships among Earth's land, oceans, atmosphere, and biological systems. This program offers scientific preparation for careers in environmental fields, as well as related areas like Law and Medicine. Environmental Science encompasses a broad range of applied Earth sciences, allowing students significant freedom to customize their studies while completing foundational coursework in math and science. By selecting courses from four of seven specialized categories, students can explore diverse environmental science approaches, including preparation for graduate studies. Early consultation with the Environmental Science undergraduate advisor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences is highly recommended to plan coursework within these disciplinary groups. Students are also encouraged to complete an undergraduate thesis (courses 493 and 495) under faculty guidance.
This program emphasizes applying biological, chemical, and physical principles to understand our environment and address ecological challenges. Topics include pollution control, human-environment interactions, and natural resource management. The curriculum covers biology, chemistry, physics, geosciences, climatology, statistics, and mathematical modeling.
