The Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene program requires a three-semester pre-professional college year followed by a five-semester curriculum starting each spring. A summer session is included between junior and senior years. Class sizes are capped at 24 students due to facility constraints. Beyond standard tuition and living expenses, students must purchase instrument kits costing around $4,000, plus annual fees of approximately $2,000 for dental supplies, clinic costs, uniforms, graduation fees, and professional association membership. These fees may change with approval from the UNM Health Science Center Chancellor. Students must also cover transportation costs for off-campus rotations.
This program trains students to perform teeth cleaning, apply preventive treatments, educate patients about oral health, identify oral diseases and injuries, and manage dental hygiene practices. Coursework covers dental anatomy, microbiology, pathology, hygiene techniques, equipment maintenance, dental materials, radiology, patient counseling, practice management, clinical training, and professional standards.
