This certificate program offers a hands-on, practical introduction to using computers in molecular biology, emphasizing key concepts in biological sequence and structure representation and analysis. Students with backgrounds in both computer science and molecular biology will gain expertise in producing, processing, and understanding biological data, along with the skills to utilize this knowledge in medical and biotech applications. The program serves two complementary groups: 1) molecular biology students needing computer skills enhancement for bioinformatics, and 2) computer science students seeking to apply their technical abilities to biological challenges.
The 15-credit certificate consists of five courses blending bioinformatics, molecular genetics, and computer science. Required prerequisites are undergraduate-level molecular biology or biochemistry plus college algebra.
