Over 85% of the seafloor remains uncharted territory. Today's ocean cartographers are pioneers, excelling not just in seabed mapping techniques but also specializing in seabed geology and marine ecosystem mapping. Engineering students concentrate on creating advanced instruments, sensors, and methodologies for ocean exploration. At UNH, you'll acquire essential expertise through demanding coursework and global research initiatives across New England and beyond. Our curriculum is directed by the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center, a key hub for the Seabed 2030 initiative striving to comprehensively chart the global ocean floor by 2030. We're one of just two North American institutions offering the prestigious IHO/FIG/ICA-certified Hydrographic Surveyors program. Students enjoy unparalleled access to cutting-edge facilities at the Jere A. Chase Ocean Engineering Lab and the specialized 48-foot R/V Gulf Surveyor research vessel. The majority of admitted students receive financial support as Research Associates through external funding.
International applicants must hold a four-year baccalaureate degree or its equivalent as a precondition for applying to any of our graduate programs. In some cases, you may also need a master’s degree or its equivalent.
