Marine biologists work to study and conserve ocean and coastal environments along with their diverse species. Earning an advanced degree in marine biology equips you for rewarding opportunities in scientific research, technological innovation, teaching, and community engagement. UNH stands out as a premier choice for graduate studies in marine biology due to its strategic location, expert faculty, and cutting-edge facilities. Our professors specialize in fields from molecular biology to ecological systems and fisheries management, frequently employing interdisciplinary approaches and modern techniques to tackle marine science challenges. Situated approximately 5 miles from the Great Bay Estuary (site of the UNH Jackson Estuarine Laboratory) and 30 miles from the ocean (home to the UNH Coastal Marine Laboratory), our Durham campus provides exceptional access to marine research sites. Both laboratories maintain fleets of research vessels for faculty and student use. The university also offers a rigorous dive certification program for aspiring research divers. Additionally, campus features include advanced research infrastructure such as DNA analysis equipment, aquaculture research spaces, and specialized microscopy and instrumentation centers.
International applicants must hold a four-year baccalaureate degree or its equivalent as a precondition for applying to any of our graduate programs. In some cases, you may also need a master’s degree or its equivalent.
