For students passionate about studying music's historical development, cultural influences, and performance traditions, the M.A. in Music with a musicology concentration provides essential research training. Participants engage with scholarly methodologies while taking three specialized seminars covering diverse musical subjects (past offerings have examined 19th-century orchestral works, John Cage's compositions, and Wagner's operas). The program culminates in writing a substantial, publishable research paper. This musicology degree enhances analytical capabilities applicable to academic research, teaching, or performance careers, while also serving as preparation for doctoral studies in musicology or performance practice.

The Musicology Master of Arts program facilitates rigorous examination of musical historiography, analytical techniques, and critical discourse. This concentration particularly benefits performers and music educators seeking to complement their practical training with scholarly expertise. Our Music Department boasts a distinguished legacy in both musicological research and artistic performance. Numerous alumni have successfully entered prestigious doctoral programs. The curriculum includes sufficient elective options to allow qualified students - upon passing an audition - to undertake advanced performance studies alongside their academic coursework.
