Our Ph.D. program in mechanical engineering equips you for academic, governmental, or private sector careers by developing expertise in one of six focus areas: fluid dynamics and thermal science, solid mechanics, materials science, design and manufacturing, dynamic systems and control, or ocean engineering. You'll gain profound knowledge in your specialization while broadening your perspective through coursework and weekly graduate seminars in mechanical engineering.

UNH offers flexible pathways aligned with your professional aspirations. You'll take innovative courses that provide state-of-the-art methodologies and allow you to address complex societal issues with technical solutions. You'll collaborate with distinguished researchers, including faculty members who've earned notable National Science Foundation CAREER awards (nearly two-thirds of our mechanical engineering professors). The program provides access to exceptional research facilities like the John Olson Advanced Manufacturing Center, the upgraded Jere A. Chase Ocean Engineering Laboratory, and the world's largest boundary-layer wind tunnel at the Flow Physics Facility.
