As one of the nation's rare programs in this field, UNH's secondary theatre education track equips you to instruct theatre and guide productions for students from kindergarten through high school. You'll explore theatre history and direction, design fundamentals and technical theatre, along with pedagogical approaches for theatre instruction. The program provides real-world teaching opportunities with K-12 students. Upon completing your degree, you can immediately begin working as a teaching artist at professional theatres, obtain New Hampshire Theatre Arts K-12 teaching certification, or continue with a fifth-year master's in teaching program through UNH's Education Department.
For those passionate about sharing their enthusiasm for theatre with young learners, this specialized program delivers both practical skills and theoretical knowledge for educators. Standing among a select group of similar programs nationwide, UNH's Secondary Theatre Education track features six dedicated courses on theatre pedagogy. Through rigorous coursework and lab experiences, students accumulate substantial hands-on teaching practice, ensuring they graduate with extensive experience working with K-12 students. The curriculum offers thorough preparation specifically designed for aspiring theatre educators, whether in school settings or as professional teaching artists. Graduates may choose to immediately enter the field as theatre educators, work towards NH Theatre Arts K-12 certification from their first year, or opt for the accelerated master's in teaching program. Earning a master's degree can substantially increase starting salaries. Regardless of whether students pursue graduate certification or enter the profession after their bachelor's degree, UNH prepares them thoroughly for the challenges of theatre education.
Each student must have their official high school diploma or general equivalency diploma.
