The University of Nevada, Reno's (UNR) Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology provides a rigorous, comprehensive graduate program leading to M.S. or Ph.D. degrees in biochemistry. This program prepares students to tackle biochemical challenges through molecular-level investigation and critical thinking. Faculty research spans diverse topics while maintaining a shared focus on macromolecular structures and their functions within biological systems. Students gain valuable experience working with faculty from both the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources (CABNR) and the Desert Research Institute, whose expertise covers various biomedical and life science disciplines. All faculty lead active research initiatives and are committed to mentoring students at all levels, from undergraduates to postdoctoral researchers.
Graduates with molecular life sciences training enjoy excellent career opportunities. Employment forecasts predict significant shortages in science and engineering positions over the next two decades, particularly in biochemistry and molecular biology. Potential career paths encompass: Agricultural and crop genetic engineering, Biomedical technology
Biopharmaceutical development, Clinical laboratory science, Forensic DNA analysis, Genomic research, Plant and animal biotechnology, Computational biology and bioinformatics
Environmental toxicology
Application Deadlines: Dec 15 (Fall) | June 15 (Spring).
