The Public Health Ph.D. program focuses on developing the specialized skills needed for research careers in epidemiology or social behavioral health. This doctoral degree equips students for roles demanding advanced analytical and conceptual abilities, including academic teaching, research, consulting, policy formulation, and other leadership positions. As a top-tier research university, the University of Nevada, Reno actively involves its Ph.D. candidates in cutting-edge research initiatives that contribute to public health knowledge and influence health policies or practices.
The School of Public Health faculty and students engage in innovative research across diverse public health domains. Their work receives funding from various federal, state, local, and private organizations, including the NIH, NSF, NIOSH, NIEHS, and CDC.
Upon completion, graduates will demonstrate the ability to:
Analyze and integrate scientific literature with critical insight.
Formulate novel research hypotheses and questions to advance public health understanding.
Select and implement suitable methodological and analytical strategies for public health research.
Uphold ethical standards in handling public health data throughout its lifecycle.
Present research methods and outcomes persuasively through clear scientific writing and presentations.
Process and examine data using both traditional and contemporary methods with software like SAS, R, STATA, SPlus, and WinBUGS.
Understand findings from epidemiological study analyses.
Communicate statistical models and results effectively to varied audiences through written and spoken presentations.
Master of Public Health (MPH) degree or relevant master’s or doctoral degrees from accredited institutions, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4-point scale preferred. Occasionally, students can be admitted with a health-related bachelor’s degree with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 that is confirmed before beginning classes.
Minimum scores: TOEFL: 550 (paper) or 79 (internet); IELTS: 6.5 (academic version); Duolingo: 105.
