The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) provides a rigorous, comprehensive graduate program combining research and coursework for students pursuing M.S. or Ph.D. degrees in biochemistry. This program prepares scientists to tackle biochemical challenges through molecular-level investigation and critical thinking. Faculty research spans diverse areas while maintaining a shared focus on examining macromolecular structures and functions within biological systems. Students gain valuable perspectives through collaborations with faculty from both the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources (CABNR) and the Desert Research Institute. Our faculty's expertise encompasses numerous biomedical and life science disciplines, with each professor leading active research initiatives and mentoring students at all levels - from undergraduates to postdoctoral researchers.
Graduates with molecular life sciences training enjoy excellent career opportunities. Employment forecasts predict significant shortages in science and engineering positions over the next two decades, particularly in biochemistry and molecular biology. Potential career paths include: Agricultural and crop genetic engineering, Biomedical technology
Biopharmaceutical development, Clinical laboratory science, Forensic DNA analysis, Genomic research, Plant and animal biotechnology, Computational biology and bioinformatics
Environmental toxicology
