This four-year Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology prepares graduates for immediate employment in the biotechnology field while offering pathways for advanced study. Students can transition into the accelerated one-year Master's in Biotechnology program (see link) or pursue doctoral studies. The undergraduate curriculum emphasizes molecular biology coursework and includes hands-on research opportunities in academic or industrial environments, allowing students to bridge theory with practical skills. Qualified seniors maintaining a 3.0 GPA or above may take 1-2 approved graduate courses per semester during their final year. Note: This program isn't ideal for pre-med or health profession students (consider the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology BS instead). Graduates will: master core biotechnology concepts spanning biochemistry, molecular biology, and cellular biology applications; develop comprehensive lab competencies in biochemical assays, genetic engineering, protein analysis, and molecular techniques; solve biotechnology challenges through independent and collaborative problem-solving using multiple analytical approaches; communicate scientific findings effectively through written, oral, and visual formats; understand ethical guidelines and regulatory frameworks governing biotech research while maintaining professional standards; and gain industry-ready qualifications for careers in biotech firms, research institutions, government agencies, or related fields.
To be admitted to an undergraduate degree program as a regular freshman student, you must be a graduate from an approved or accredited high school (GED certificate may not be used for admission) and satisfy the below requirements: You must have a 3.0 weighted GPA in the academic core courses in order to be admitted to the University of Nevada, Reno. The academic courses include: English, math, social sciences and natural sciences. A weighted GPA takes into account the extra difficulty of honors, AP or IB classes. You must submit your final, official high school transcripts to support your application for admission. SAT/ACT scores: We do not require SAT or ACT scores for admission or scholarship consideration
