The Clinical Laboratory Science Option (CLS) within the Biotechnology major is designed for students passionate about laboratory work and interested in pursuing careers as scientists in hospital labs, medical practices, reference laboratories, or industrial settings. CLS roles generally require professional certification. To obtain certification, students need a bachelor's degree, completion of an approved clinical training program, and passing a national examination to validate their scientific expertise. Consequently, the CLS curriculum includes an intensive 11-month training period at an approved School of Clinical Laboratory Science. Applicants must apply directly to accredited CLS programs during their junior year (Semester 5). Admission is highly competitive, based on academic performance, three recommendation letters, and an on-site interview. The program maintains partnerships with Hershey Medical Center, York Hospital, St. Vincent Hospital, and Pennsylvania Hospital, with flexibility to establish temporary affiliations when necessary. Students transition to their clinical training after fulfilling all foundational science and general education requirements.
Biotechnology involves utilizing molecular and cellular biology to develop biologically significant or commercially valuable products. Key areas include genetic modification, drug development, and biological production processes.
