Philosophy students develop rigorous analytical skills, learn to interpret complex texts, and gain insight into how all aspects of existence interconnect (as one prominent philosopher described it). This major provides exceptional training for careers valuing clear thinking and articulate expression.
Students will develop the ability to:
formulate philosophical arguments about texts or problems, clearly present their position, and support it with evidence while addressing opposing views.
understand and interpret key philosophical thinkers and traditions, while examining core questions across philosophy's major branches.
evaluate arguments effectively, identifying sound reasoning and recognizing logical connections.
clarify the significance of abstract debates, whether historical or current, and demonstrate how philosophical perspectives influence real-world theory and practice.
To be admitted to an undergraduate degree program as a regular freshman student, you must be a graduate from an approved or accredited high school. You must have a 3.0 weighted GPA in the academic core courses in order to be admitted to the University of Nevada, Reno.
Verification of having met the English requirement through one of the following options: TOEFL score 61+; IELTS (must be academic version) with a score of 6.0+; Duolingo English Exam score 95+; Cambridge score of B2+.
