The mathematics department provides programs culminating in a Bachelor of Arts degree with a mathematics major. These undergraduate degrees feature concentrations in applied mathematics, discrete mathematics/operations research, statistics, or broad mathematical studies. The BA program delivers a classic liberal arts education through a well-rounded curriculum encompassing arts, humanities, foreign languages, and social and natural sciences. Prospective mathematics majors should meet with a Mathematics and Statistics Department advisor to develop their academic plan in mathematics or statistics.
Graduates will develop the ability to:
apply problem-solving and modeling techniques, recognizing the interplay between practical applications and theoretical concepts. This involves converting real-world challenges into abstract models, employing mathematical/statistical methods to find solutions, and interpreting results in practical contexts.
understand mathematical proof construction, developing skills to formulate precise mathematical arguments.
utilize computational tools effectively for problem-solving and hypothesis generation through technological applications.
