Established in 1991, the History Department's Ph.D. program represents the highest fulfillment of the Department's goal to create and share innovative knowledge via research, critical examination, and scholarly writing. Students can specialize in three key fields: the North American West, North American Culture and Society, or European Culture and Society. Designed to equip graduates with advanced research skills and creative thinking abilities, the program prepares them for academic careers in high schools, community colleges, and universities. The inaugural doctoral candidate completed the program in 1996.

Post-Bachelor's subplans
B.A. or equivalent from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.75.
Students must have written an Honors Thesis in History or a closely related field, which must be uploaded as part of the application.
Post-Master's subplans
M.A. or equivalent from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.50.
Students who have not completed HIST 710 and HIST 740 as part of their master's degree will be required to complete them as a condition of their admission. Note: These courses will not count toward the 35 credits required for the Doctor of Philosophy History.
