The collaborative Ph.D. Program in Public Historical Studies unites the expertise and facilities of UC Santa Barbara and California State University, Sacramento to create a one-of-a-kind doctoral program nationwide. This partnership provides comprehensive historical education alongside hands-on professional training, equipping scholars for diverse career paths as historians in museums, heritage locations, government agencies, corporations, archives, non-profits, foundations, and academic institutions. Graduates gain thorough knowledge of historical scholarship, methodologies, theoretical discussions, and the unique considerations involved in public history practice. Participants collaborate with faculty from various academic and professional fields, select from numerous specialization areas across time periods, regions, and subjects, and receive support for developing creative research focuses. The program offers access to Sacramento's, Santa Barbara's, and UC Washington D.C. Center's rich historical assets, positions at the field's leading publication - The Public Historian, and guidance from an accomplished network of public history alumni.
