The Department of Physics and Astronomy provides graduate programs for both master's and PhD degrees. Home to around 80 graduate students and 27 faculty members, the department fosters a welcoming, collaborative environment that encourages strong faculty-student relationships. Faculty research grants exceeding $16 million annually enable student research assistantships, funding for conference travel, and use of advanced research tools like computational resources and fully equipped electronic and instrument workshops. A prime example of our innovative facilities is the Extreme Light Laboratory, featuring a multimillion-dollar laser system that achieves unprecedented light intensity levels. This groundbreaking technology not only advances fundamental physics research but also has significant cross-disciplinary applications in fields ranging from materials science and chemistry to biology, medicine, security, and defense.
