The Department of Sociology offers exceptional opportunities to collaborate with dedicated research scholars across key disciplines: family and life course studies, social inequality (examining race, class, and gender), and health research encompassing both physical and mental wellbeing. Our department fosters a robust mentoring culture for graduate students, who engage closely with faculty through coursework and joint research initiatives. Students benefit from access to comprehensive research resources including: major datasets for independent or team-based research projects, top-tier training in survey methodology and statistical analysis, state-of-the-art computing resources, close partnerships with the Bureau of Sociological Research (BOSR) and Survey Research and Methods Program (SRAM), and a proven track record of securing significant federal research grants (currently from NIH, NSF, NIMH, and NIDA). The program also provides structured teacher preparation and ample classroom experience. This nurturing, collaborative atmosphere enables students to flourish as both academic researchers and educators.
