The Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies provides advanced degree programs culminating in M.S. and Ph.D. qualifications. As a charter member of the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (IDEA), the department delivers multiple online graduate programs via the Great Plains IDEA university network. Learners can utilize both the Family Resource Center (FRC) and the Ruth Staples Child Development Laboratory (CDL). Marriage and Family Therapy students at the FRC provide counseling services to individuals, couples, and families both in-person and through telehealth platforms serving Nebraska's rural populations. The FRC additionally functions as a research facility, offering hands-on investigative opportunities with various family structures and therapeutic approaches. Child development and early childhood education students acquire practical teaching skills at the CDL while working directly with children and families. This facility also serves as a research hub, enabling scholarly work focused on childhood development and educational curricula. The CDL maintains accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), a distinction held by only 9% of programs nationwide, and has been operational since 1925.
