The Department of Animal Science provides advanced studies focused on animal breeding and genetics, meat and poultry science, nutrition for both ruminant and non-ruminant species, and physiological research. Students have access to modern analytical labs and specialized animal research facilities. These state-of-the-art resources support fundamental and practical investigations involving large animals, poultry, and laboratory species. The department features a comprehensive, federally approved meat laboratory dedicated to poultry and meat science studies. Furthermore, it operates research facilities located 40 minutes from Lincoln for beef and dairy cattle, sheep, and swine investigations across various disciplines. Graduate research initiatives involve partnerships with four university-affiliated research and extension centers, along with the USDA Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, Nebraska.
