The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences collaborates closely with NC State's Animal Science Department on forage research initiatives. This work involves USDA researchers based at NC State, focusing on multiple key areas: investigating how forage traits influence nutritional quality, examining nutrient cycles in crops fertilized with swine wastewater, and exploring practical grassland ecology approaches. Studies also cover silvopastoral agroforestry systems, grazing animal integration in crop production, and creating sustainable forage-based feeding systems for meat goats. Additional research examines using goats for natural weed control in pastures and woodlands, evaluating tree fodder potential in agroforestry setups for goats, and optimizing supplemental feeding strategies for forage-reliant goat diets.
