Biological systems engineering (BSEN) represents one of two engineering degree options available through the Department of Biological Systems Engineering. BSEN students concentrate their engineering studies in one of three specializations: biomedical engineering, bioenergy and food engineering, or environmental and water resources engineering. These professionals might develop micropropagation systems for tissue culture, create advanced biomaterials and biofibers, engineer equipment and processes for food and biofuel production, or design instruments for minimally invasive surgical procedures. Others may specialize in creating biological sensors and imaging technologies to diagnose human diseases, monitor plant and animal stress levels, or regulate environmental conditions in greenhouses and animal housing. Additional career paths include addressing environmental challenges related to waste management, water quality, and sustainable energy development. Graduates find employment opportunities across industrial sectors, government agencies, consulting firms, and private practice. Many graduates also choose to continue their education through graduate programs or professional studies in medicine or law.
